Michael White, professor and department head from the University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy, talks about what you can do to prevent sunburn, and how to treat it if it happens to you.

The most important thing is to buy a broad spectrum sunscreen that blocks both types of ultraviolet rays, UVA and UVB. Both types of rays can cause sun damage, White says.

In addition to sunscreen, clothes, a hat and sunglasses with ultraviolet protection are also important things to consider. If you do get a sunburn, take a cool shower or bath and apply moisturizer to make it less painful. You can also take ibuprofen or acetaminophen.
