When the New Haven Police put out the call for a few good men and women to join their department, they had no idea nearly 1,500 people wanted to join the ranks.

Today, we caught up with some current cadets to see first-hand what it really takes to become one of the Elm City’s finest.

Officers not only have to know how to use pepper spray, they have to know how it feels to get a dose right in the eyes, and then carry out their duties.

For an open 80 or 90 spots, the department heard back from 1,495 hopeful cops, and the department has strict standards.

Chief Dean Esserman says the response was so overwhelming this time around in part because of the help of local clergy who spread the word to their members.

As for the cadets training today, they are set to graduate from the academy on August 5.
