ENFIELD — A 37-year-old Enfield man was ordered held on $350,000 bail after he was arraigned Friday on charges that he forced his way into an elderly woman’s home, assaulted her and stole her television and jewelry.

Toby A. Berthiaume of Enfield was arrested Wednesday night in connection with the May 6 home invasion at his neighbor’s Windsor Street home.

Berthiaume, who lives three houses away, faces charges of home invasion, first-degree burglary, third-degree assault and fourth-degree larceny.

Police said Berthiaume went to the 93-year-old woman’s home with a package, and when she opened the door, forced his way inside.

The woman’s daughter called police when she arrived at the home about a half hour after the incident and found the house ransacked, blood on the floor and her mother’s television and jewelry missing, police said. The victim was not seriously injured in the incident, police said.

Police said they recovered the TV and some jewelry at Money Stop 450 in Springfield, where Berthiaume sold the items at 3:46 p.m. on May 6, 29 minutes after the victim called her daughter to say a man forced his way into her home and taken items.

Berthiaume’s family told reporters outside court that he was selling the items for a friend who did not have ID.

He is due back in court on July 19.
