“Anthony is so smart. He’s intelligent. He’s athletic. He’s a sweet little boy. He loves everybody, always making friends with people,” his mother, Tamyra Bernoudy, said as the search was going on.
The boy was reported missing about 6 p.m.
He had been last seen along the water’s edge of Green Harbor Beach, according to police.
It was an emotional scene as the boy’s family was at the beach as rescuers recovered the body and removed it from the water.
In the aftermath, the city announced that Green Harbor Beach will be closed Friday and New London Community boating at Green Harbor Beach is canceled while city personnel “assess if it is safe to reopen and resume normal programs.”
“An announcement of any reopening or further closure … will be made by 4 p.m. Friday,” the statement said.
