NEW LONDON — Green Harbor Beach will be closed today after the body of a 6-year-old was found in the water late Thursday.

The body of Anthony Bernoudy was found about 11:20 p.m., hours after police, firefighters and others began searching for the missing boy. Anthony was last seen along the water’s edge about 5:30 or 6 p.m.; his disappearance triggered a Silver alert.

The boy’s family was at the beach as rescuers found the body and removed it from the water.

He would have turned 7 on July 10.

“His birthday is next week,” said his tearful mother, Tamyra Bernoudy, before his body was recovered. “Anthony is so smart. He’s intelligent. He’s athletic. He liked everybody. He always was friends with people.”

“I’m too hurt,” she said, her voice breaking.

In the aftermath, the city announced that Green Harbor Beach will be closed Friday and New London Community boating at Green Harbor Beach is canceled while city personnel “assess if it is safe to reopen and resume normal programs.”

“An announcement of any reopening or further closure … will be made by 4 p.m. Friday,” the statement said.
