Humberto Diaz stabbed a man who tried to keep him from kidnapping his wife, police said. He was charged with criminal attempt to commit murder and home invasion.

Diaz, of West Street in New Britain, also was charged with first-degree assault, third-degree assault, second-degree kidnapping, carrying a dangerous weapon and disorderly conduct, police said Friday.

According to police, the attack happened about 11 p.m. Wednesday when Diaz went to his sister-in-law’s apartment on South Whiting Street. Using force, he tried to remove his wife, they said.

Diaz used a 9-inch knife to stab one of the people in the apartment who intervened, police said. He threw the bloody knife near an adjacent garage and ran, they said.

Police later recovered the knife, which they said is similar to the knives in a set they found inside Diaz’s apartment, according to a police press release.

The man who was stabbed was listed in guarded/critical condition at 6:30 a.m. Thursday, police said. Updated information about his condition was not available Friday.

Police said Diaz is wanted by authorities in Puerto Rico on charges of sexual assault of a minor.
