Middletown’s mayor has a bright idea.

Mayor Dan Drew says he wants to know what it would take to line the Arrigoni Bridge with lights – not street lights, decorative lights.   He’s asked a local engineering firm to give him an estimate of what it might cost to install LED lighting along the steel span.

Drew thinks it might turn the local landmark into a regional attraction. He says it’s a perfect project as the city is trying to highlight its Connecticut River coastline, “There are studies that show that for every dollar invested in bridge lighting projects, there’s a significant return on investment.”

Drew says a lighted bridge could show businesses and tourists the way to Middletown and encourage economic development and tourism.

Any plan would have to be approved by the city council, and most likely, voters, because the project would likely be bonded through the city.  Drew expects to receive the engineering report and cost estimates this week.

San Francisco and Corpus Christie, Texas have recently completed lighted bridges
