A recent poll by Gallup found that 70 percent of professionals are disengaged at work and essentially not happy. The “State of the American Workplace: Employee Engagement Insights for U.S. Business Leaders” report provides insight for managers and leaders as to what they can do to improve employee engagement, according to Kelleigh Marquard, of Robert Half and Associates.

Marquard says during the economic downturn many employees have had to take on additional responsibilities without receiving more pay. She says that offering raises or bonuses for employees is a good way to keep them engaged and motivated, but in lieu of that, non-monetary perks such as subsidized training or education and mentoring can help.

Interestingly, the survey found that the most engaged workers are those who work remotely, which means bosses should consider letting their employees have flexible schedules or telecommute, according to Marquard.
