Wacky Weather Continues In Connecticut

For the past couple of years, everyone wants to know what the deal is with our weather…from snow storms and tropical storms in successive Octobers to a blizzard, flooding rains and seemingly a tornado a day. But, there are certain folks who don’t mind our wacky weather: tree removal businesses.

Business has increased for many contractors by some forty to fifty percent since hurricane Irene came ashore in august of 2011.

The soil found in many parts of Connecticut does not drain very well, which can cause big problems for trees. Especially this time of year, when the trees are leafed out completely, wind and wet soil can be a bad mix.

There are certain types of trees that are especially susceptible to being toppled in storms, including silver maples, which can develop rot in the middle. White oaks and red oaks are also trees to make certain you keep trimmed or even take down at the appropriate time.

So, what’s up with this weather pattern, which hasn’t existed in several decades?

Fox Connecticut meteorologist Joe Furey says, “We have changes on the sun. The sun spot situation is significant. There have been changes in the ocean. We have seen the Pacific Ocean now turn colder, while the Atlantic gets warmer. That has a great effect on pressure systems around the globe. “

Furey says this weather pattern could be in places for several years.
