Human trafficking is a global civil issue that effects the United States.
Made By Survivors is an international nonprofit organization helps survivors of slavery and other abuses through education and employment, including the art of jewelry design and metal-smithing.
“Our programs create jobs in highly respected professions. We create jobs with high wages that develop business and leadership skills,” said Sarah Symons, founder of Made By Survivors.
A number of the celebrities endorse the organization by wearing the jewelry, including: Patricia Arquette, Joe Pesci, Sarah Hyland, Chris Tucker, Kevin McHale, and Sugar Ray Leonard.
In a recent memoir, “This Is No Ordinary Joy,” Symons recounts her journey and the uplifting stories of some of the survivors involved in her program. “Our survivors are some of the most inspiring people you could ever wish to meet. They take whatever help we give them and multiply it, transforming their lives, families and communities,” said Symons.
Sarah Symons graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1990 from the University of Pennsylvania and since then, she has traveled the world and composed music. She is the founder and President of Endurance Music, Program Director and Artist in Residence for Creative Arts Workshops (a program that serves homeless children in New York City), and the founder of Made By Survivors in partnership with her husband. In 2009, she was the recipient of the Count Me In Micro to Millions competition, the recipient of a Sam Walton Foundation award for women entrepreneurs, and was honored by the V-Day Foundation for her work preventing violence against women.
