Golf courses in Connecticut, both public and private, have been struggling for several years. And, June’s heavy rain, immediately followed by sweltering heat, have compounded matters.

Bob Tiedeman, Head Pro at Meriden’s Hunter Memorial Golf Course, says his business is down by approximately 15 percent.

“The regulars go out and play golf,” said Tiedeman. “It’s the people that pay as they go that want it to be nice and it hasn’t been the best.”

Jack McConachie, the 36-year Head Pro at Southington’s Pine Valley Golf Course, says you just have to roll with the punches.

“There is plenty of good weather left. And, the heat is bound to break sometime,” the measured McConachie noted.

Most golfers playing at noon today say they are simply trying to make up for time they couldn’t play during the June monsoons.

One way to beat the heat and still sharpen up your golf game is to head indoors and hit at a retail store’s range.

“People can try equipment and see all the results on the monitors that we have,” said David LaVoie, of Golfer’s Warehouse.

Retail establishments say their business is not impacted much by weather.
