National travel website TripAdvisor released a ranking of the top 10 cities in the nation for pizza, and to the surprise of many in Connecticut, New Haven was not included.

“Wait a minute they must be wrong, it isn’t even on the list?” asked Mayor John DeStefano.

“New Haven pizza is the best in the world,” noted Colin Caplan, owner of the food tour company Taste of New Haven. “There’s a reason why a lot of cities like Chicago, San Diego, Portland, Hood River, Oregon, Delray Beach Florida  Washington,  D. C.  and others have New Haven style pizza joints in their cities, because our pizza is the best.”

The Elm City is known for apizza style pies, made famous by restaurants like Frank Pepe’s. The Wooster Street favorite is now run by the founder’s grandchildren, including Gary Bimonte.  Bimonte was shocked by the travel site’s omission. “I can’t explain that, we even got a certificate of excellence from TripAdvisor,  so I don’t know I think maybe somebody just had a faux pas.”

San Diego, California topped Trip Advisor’s list followed by Las Vegas, Nevada and Boston, Massachusetts.
