More federal help is coming Connecticut’s way as shoreline communities continue to rebuild after Sandy.

The head of the Department Of Housing And Urban Development, Secretary Shaun Donovan, was in Milford with a promise of $71 million.

He said the federal grant will be used to fill in the gaps…in other words, construction expenses which insurance doesn’t cover.

That includes raising homes several feet to spare them from future floods.

Nearly 250 homes in Milford are now required by law to be raised because those homes have suffered flood damage within the last 10 years worth at least 50% of the value of the homes.

Colin Buchanan, who lives on James Street, estimated that it’ll cost him well over $100,000 to raise his home.  “Insurance-wise for the inside, it’s fine, I’m not concerned about how I’m going to fix the inside, it’s how am I going to raise the outside?”

Sec. Donovan said who qualifies for the HUD money is based on income and he claimed there will be some flexibility on that.
