MIDDLETOWN — Firefighters quickly extinguished a small fire in a downtown building Monday morning, a fire official said Monday.

No one was injured in the fire at 695 Main St. A popular tavern on the first floor, Eli Cannons Tap Room, has water damage, Assistant Chief Jay Woron said.

A police officer who was driving by spotted the fire on the top floor of the three-story building and reported it at 6:33 a.m., Woron said. Firefighters — stationed down the street — arrived soon after and extinguished it with help from the apartment’s water sprinkler system. The fire never spread, he said.

A large amount of water flowed downstairs to the bar, Woron said. A crew was at the scene Monday cleaning up, he said.

The fire marshal’s office is investigating.
