According to Yaverbaum, Twitter activity can increase television viewership of shows that air live. A recent Nielsen study stated that Twitter activity caused statistically “significant changes” 29 percent of the time for people watching television. According to Nielsen, Twitter influences ratings, and ratings influence what is happening in social media.
Yaverbaum said Twitter and social media can help give viewers a sense of community: instead of watching an episode with one or a few people, you are watching it now with hundreds of thousands or millions of people and you can interact with them live.
