AVON — Three units at the Farmington Woods condominium complex in Avon were heavily damaged by an early morning fire on Thursday.
Avon Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Chief Bruce Appell said no firefighters were hurt and that the eight people living in the block of condos on Heritage Drive where the blaze broke out also got out unharmed. Two of those residents, Dan Moyal and Amanda Johnson, said they were awakened by commotion.
“When we woke up there were voices outside, and then someone tapped on our window and said there was a fire and that we should get out as fast as we could. And that’s what we did,” Moyal said. “When we got out, the end unit was engulfed in flames.”
Moyal and Johnson could not go back into their home on Thursday morning but said their unit was the one farthest from where the fire broke out and were optimistic that it was undamaged.
“We told the police who was where, and then it was just wait and watch,” Moyal said.
“And pray,” said Johnson.
Appell said that 50 firefighters from throughout the Farmington Valley responded to the scene. He said the fire was knocked down in about an hour and a half. In addition to Avon, the fire departments in Canton, Farmington and Simsbury went to the scene, Appell said.
The fire was reported about 4:30 a.m. and the building that burned contains five units. Appell said three units sustained extensive fire damage but that the other two were not damaged.
Officials were still investigating the cause of the fire on Thursday morning. In addition to the town fire marshal, staff from the state fire marshal’s office were investigating.
