They might have lost in the Little League World Series U.S. championship game, but along the way Westport’s Little Leaguers won the hearts of pretty much everyone here in Connecticut, including Gov. Dannel Malloy.

Gov. Malloy hosted the players and their coaches at the governor’s mansion Monday night for some pizza and conversation.

It has been quite a ride for Westport’s Little League players, who have been honored at Yankee Stadium and are headed to a Fenway Park celebration this weekend.

It’s not going to their heads. These kids are stunned by the attention, and by the fact that even the governor was paying attention. You know your season was unforgettable when the governor brings up details of the games.

Gov. Malloy had lots of questions for the players about their championship run, what it was like, how they felt.  In return, they asked what sport he played growing up (football) and what his favorite food is (fried chicken).

An opportunity made possible by their participation in sports.
