The highway will be closed Saturday evening and much of Sunday so that a bridge replacement project just across the border in New York can proceed.
Westbound I-84 at exit 1 in Danbury will close at 5 p.m. Saturday and reopen sometime on Sunday. Traffic will be detoured to exit 20 in the Town of Southeast, N.Y., where motorists will be able to get back onto I-84.
Officials are urging motorists to avoid the area and seek alternate routes.
The eastbound lanes are scheduled to be closed the weekend of Oct. 19-20 with the detour reversed.
New York’s state Department of Transportation is replacing two bridges that carry I-84 over Dingle Ridge Road in the Town of Southeast in Putnam County.
The replacement bridges have been constructed adjacent to the existing bridges. During the highway closures, the existing bridges will be demolished and the new bridges slid into place. Approaches will also have to be raised about 2 inches.
