ORANGE — The 18-year-old driver whose car smashed into a utility pole on Indian River Road on Friday afternoon, injuring the four teens in the vehicle, died Saturday afternoon, police said.

A.J. Cedillo, 18, of West Haven, had suffered the most serious injuries of the four, police said. The three passengers, all teenage girls, were hurt, two seriously, according to police.

The two girls with the serious injuries remained hospitalized Saturday evening. A third passenger was treated for her injuries and has been released from the hospital, according to Anthony Cuozzo, assistant chief of the Orange Police Department.

Officers will be examining the vehicle and interviewing witnesses. Anyone who may have information that may assist investigators are asked to call officer Brian Foote at 203-891-2130, Cuozzo said.

The four were in a black Subaru traveling west on Indian River Road when the driver lost control and the vehicle crashed into a utility pole in front of 85 Indian River Road, police said.

Friday’s crash, which happened at a bend in the quiet suburban road, was reported by several 911 callers at 3:54 p.m. One witness said that only one of the teens was responsive when emergency responders arrived. The pole appeared to be driven deep into the vehicle, the witness said.

A portion of Indian River Road was closed for six hours while police investigated the crash.
