Electric Boat has been awarded an additional $152.4 million from the U.S. Navy to update drawings and data for all the Virginia class submarines, which will be constructed through 2019.

The total value for this design contract, through 2014, is $921.4 million. There are more than 4,000 engineers and technical staff working in design for Electric Boat, a subsidiary of General Dynamics, which announced the contract award Wednesday.

Each one of the submarines, which are built in Groton and in Virginia, cost more than $2 billion. The U.S.S. Mississippi, built in Rhode Island and Connecticut, was delivered a year ahead of schedule.

Rep. Joe Courtney, D-2nd District, lauded the contract Wednesday. He issued a statement that said: “This investment shows that even in times of fiscal uncertainty, the work that Electric Boat employees are doing each day remains absolutely crucial to the strength of our submarine fleet and our national security.”
