AMHERST, N.Y. – Buffalo pummeled UConn on the strength of two interceptions, a fumble recovery and five sacks before the fourth quarter arrived, but that was enough to lift the Bulls to a convincing 41-12 win before 20,952 at UB Stadium.

As a result the Huskies will go into their second bye week of the season with an 0-4 record. UConn last started 0-4 in 1991. Buffalo improved to 2-2.

The Huskies were headed that way early in the first after the Bulls’ Adam Redden forced the ball out of quarterback Chandler Whitmer’s hand and recovered it at the UConn 8-yard line. Bulls quarterback Joe Licata found tight end Mason Schreck for a 5-yard touchdown.

The Huskies managed a field goal on the following possession, a 33-yarder by Chad Christen, but after holding the Bulls on the following series, they were able to increase their lead to 14-3 lead in the first quarter after Najja Johnson intercepted a Whitmer pass and returned it 33 yards for a TD. It was the fifth interception of the season for Whitmer, and he would throw No. 6 in the second half in what was yet another dismal showing for the Huskies offense.

UConn had beaten the Bulls in 12 of the previous 13 meetings.

The Huskies next play Oct. 12 at home against South Florida.
