An old Episcopal church in Avon is converting to Islam, with the Diocese blessing.

Christ Church on Harris Road shutdown at the end of last year, but it’s about to open its doors again as a place of worship for the Farmington Valley American Muslim Center.

The Episcopal Diocese Of Connecticut deconsecrated the church…removing crosses, stained glass, and the altar.

The Diocese is leasing the building to the Muslim group on a year to year basis, and together they have formed an interfaith partnership to highlight religious understanding.

“By partnering with the Diocese we hope that we create a model for others to replicate not only in the United States, but also throughout the world,” Dr. Khamis Abu-Hasaballah, the Muslim Center’s President, said.

The first day of prayers will be Friday, and a big celebration is planned for the Muslim holiday Eid, October 15.
