Capt. Roger Martin of the Hartford fire marshal’s office talks about what you can do to prevent cooking fires from happening and how to stop them if they do occur, including a new technology you can purchase. October is National Fire Prevention Month.
The Hartford Fire Department received a grant for 5,000 smoke detectors and 1,500 pairs of StoveTop FireStop automatic fire suppressors. The fire suppressors are placed above a stove, and when they detect heat, they automatically dispense the chemical sodium bicarbonate to put the fire out.
Hartford firefighters will be installing the detectors and fire suppressors starting in high-risk groups, in particular the elderly, children and people with disability.
