DANBURY — A barking police dog disarmed an ax-wielding man Wednesday night, police said.

According to police, officers were sent to the area of Hillside Street shortly after 10 p.m. Police had received a report of a man, later identified as Anthony Ramirez, 24, of Danbury, swinging an ax at another person.

Witnesses told police that Ramirez came to a Hillside Street home and started arguing over money. He was asked to leave, police said.

Ramirez left, but returned moments later with an ax he stole from a neighbor’s house, the witnesses told police. He then started swinging the ax at a garage and at a car parked in the driveway, police said.

Ramirez swung the ax at the car’s owners, too, when they approached, police said.

When police arrived, Ramirez ignored officers’ orders to drop the ax, police said. He complied after a Danbury police dog named Zeke left his handler’s patrol car and began to bark at him, they said.

Ramirez was charged with reckless endangerment and sixth-degree larceny. He also was charged with two counts each of criminal mischief and breach of peace.

He was in custody Thursday morning on $50,000 bail.
