AIDS Connecticut Holds 5K Run In West Hartford

AIDS Walk/Run 2013 is a fundraiser of AIDS Connecticut. This year’s theme: “Nobody With HIV/AIDS Walks Alone.” Participants will enjoy music, beverages, snacks, tee-shirts and awards for top fundraisers and top finishers in the 5K run.

Registration for the run is $25/person. The Last Mile, LLC will serve as the official timer for the run. Awards will be presented to top male and female finishers in the following categories: 19 and under, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70+.

Registration for the walk is $10/person. We encourage both runners and walkers to bring friends and start or join a team. All participants should register online: www.ctaidscoalition.org

AIDS/HIV Facts: the following information is taken from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention: HIV in the United States.

  • Approximately one in five people living with HIV are unaware that they have HIV, placing them at greater risk of spreading the virus to others.
  • Gay and bisexual men and racial/ethnic minorities comprise the greatest proportion of HIV cases in the United States.
  • By race, Black/African Americans face the most severe burden of HIV. It is estimated that one in sixteen Black men and one in thirty-two Black women will be diagnosed with HIV infection. HIV/AIDS is one of the leading causes of death among Black men and women.
  • From 2006 to 2009 there was a thirty percent increase in HIV diagnoses in adolescents and young adults (ages 13-24).
  • Twenty-four percent of people living with HIV are 50 or older, and 15 percent of new HIV/AIDS cases occur among people in the age group

In Hartford:

  • There are 1,946 people living with HIV/AIDS.
  • 65% are male, 34% are female.
  • 50% are Hispanic; 34% are Black and 14% are White.
  • 47% were infected through injecting drug use, 15% were men who had sex with men, and 21% were via heterosexual transmission.
  • 46% are over the age of 50. 35% were between the ages of 40 – 49.
  • New infections 2007-2011:
    • 308 total
    • 27% MSM (58% are under the age of 30), 18% IDU, 42% Black, 45% Latino
