Sgt Micah Welintukonis, a 19 year Army veteran, started an online petition to encourage the state to help vets during the federal government shutdown. His hope is state officials will develop a back-up plan in case the Department of Veterans affairs is unable to pay disability and educational benefits to 11,000 Connecticut vets because of the federal government shutdown.

“I’d love for this to reach the Governor,” Welintukonis said In an interview with Fox Connecticut.

Jordan Massa is a disabled army veteran. He was injured by a roadside bomb during one of his two tours in Iraq. Massa waited two years for his benefits, they were approved on October 1st, the same day the shutdown began.

A loss of benefits could jeopardize Massa’s current living situation, “my roommate is also a disabled veteran, and we both use our disability checks to pay the mortgage for the house that we live in,” he said.

Massa hopes the stalemate in Washington will end soon, “I would like for them to fulfill that obligation of giving me my benefits.
