WOLCOTT — A 26-year-old man suspected of stealing a safe containing $30,000 cash and several thousand dollars worth of collectable coins from a local karate studio was apprehended Tuesday while picking up gas money from a friend, police said.

Daniel Deleo and his wife, Cynthia Deleo, 24, have spent all the stolen cash and valuable coins, likely on their heroin addiction, police said.

Investigators received at tip about the couple’s whereabouts and found them at the Wolcott-Plymouth town line Tuesday evening where they were meeting a friend who was lending them money for gas, said Sgt. Brian Boutote.

Deleo, who was recently released from prison for a burglary conviction, led police on a car chase into Bristol. State police stopped him on I-291 East by Exit 5.
