Thousands descended on Bushnell Park in Hartford Sunday for the annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk, sponsored by the American Cancer Society. Teams raise money to go toward breast cancer research.

The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service.

According to the American Cancer Society:

Making Strides is an opportunity for people of all ages to unite against a disease that affects 1 in 8 women. Some participants are recently diagnosed. Some are still in treatment. Some are years past their diagnoses. Many more are husbands, sisters, wives, parents, children, grandchildren, and friends of someone who has heard those words: “You have breast cancer.”
