They’re calling it an act of hatred against an entire community.

Graphic graffiti on a sidewalk and a home in New London had leaders speaking out about the hate crime.

The words, “get a job blacks” and swastika’s were spray painted on a sidewalk and on the side of a home in New London where an African-American family lives.

Police said this is not the first incident to happen in front of that home. On October 6, they investigated a complaint of graffiti that read, “get a job slackers.”

New London Police say they are looking into both reports to see if they are “of a similar nature.” As for the family, they are forced to see the words everyday.

“I sat out here for two hours scrubbing this with Lysol,” said 18-year-old Hakeem Dannett. Dannett shares the two-family home with family.

“I just think it’s really ridiculous because my whole family works. To say ‘Get a job blacks,’ that’s a little outrageous.”

Dannett said his aunt reported it to Police but it wasn’t until this morning when attention was brought to this graffiti.

“I was walking down a street on New London, which is a street on my way to work, and I just
happened to be looking down on the sidewalk,” said Laura Burfoot.

Burfoot was shocked to read the words and quickly reported it to authorities. Soon after community leaders came together to send a strong message to those who committed this senseless act.

“This is one act that is a hate act and New London is not a hate town,” said School Board President, Peg Curtain.

“We come together, again, rejecting this hate message,” said Mongi Dhaouadi with CAIR.

The NAACP is also involved calling on police to investigate and to make sure the family is not in any danger. They are also letting the public know, New London does not tolerate hate crime.

“This is not New London,” said Mayor Finizio. “This does not reflect New London. This does not reflect who new Londoners are.”

New London Police say they are looking into both reports to see if they are “of a similar nature.”

We’re told that city crews will come by over the weekend to clean up the graffiti.
