NEW HAVEN — Police are searching for a suspect in a fatal shooting in the Westville Manor public housing project.

The victim, identified as 21-year-old Deran Maebery, was shot around 6:18 p.m. in front of 45 Wayfarer St. He died at Yale-New Haven Hospital.

Police initially thought they had caught the shooter. Trey Mims, 20, was found in an apartment near the crime scene, and police said they were planning on charging him with Maebery’s murder.

But around 11:15 p.m., New Haven police issued a statement saying Mims had been released from custody and was not being charged.

“After a review of the evidence and interviews with witnesses, detectives investigating this evening’s homicide of Deran Maebery have determined the information provided to investigators that led to Trey Mims as a suspect in this crime is not credible,” the release states.

Police have not found the murder weapon. The investigation continues.

Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call police at 203-946-6304. Calls may be made anonymously.

This is the city’s seventeenth homicide in 2013.
