While Superstorm Sandy destroyed a lot of property, for many, the storm surge washed away things which can never be replaced. Things like family photos and home videos.
One of the hardest hit areas in Connecticut was Fairfield Beach Road in Fairfield. That’s where we dug out a photo album from the mounds of sand, as well as a standard “8” video cassette, labeled with cherished memories including “Christina’s 1st Birthday,” “Christina’s 2nd Birthday,” and “Uncle Ed’s & Grampy.”
We removed the photos to dry and wiped off as much sand as possible. For the video cassette, we brought it to Video Lab in Orange hoping to get it restored. The owner, Ron Davis, and his assistant took the whole cassette apart, cleared it of sand, put the videotape back in a new cartridge, and repeatedly rewound and fast-forwarded it to clear it of any remaining sand.
Their work paid off as they managed to save pretty much all of the one-and-a-half hour home video. Below is a 12 minute clip of certain segments from the video, as well as a gallery of the photos we found.
