Today the nation thanks the men and women who protect our country and its freedoms. And here in Connecticut, one group of veterans is receiving a long-awaited distinction, while another group is getting some much-needed help at home.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and other local leaders will be in Bridgeport today celebrating the passage of two state laws that will improve services for Connecticut veterans. The first bill provides honorary diplomas for Vietnam-era veterans who left high school early to join the armed forces. The second bill allows municipalities to increase the property tax exemption for veterans who are disabled or living on a limited income to two to three times the base exemption for veterans.

The ceremony is scheduled for 11 a.m.
