WEST HARTFORD — Police are trying to find out who vandalized a tree that had been planted in memory of a former student.

The tree was cut down and dragged to the basketball court at Duffy Elementary School, 95 Westminster Drive, between 3 p.m. Friday and 12:30 p.m. Sunday, police said. The damage was reported Sunday.

A park bench also was cut in what police said was an apparent effort to destroy it.

Police said the tree had been planted in honor of a former student who died in an out-of-state accident.

Officers questioned area residents but got no leads. Neighbors reported that youth play basketball at the school every day.

Anyone with information that might help investigators is asked to call police at 860-523-5203.
