PORTLAND — One person was killed and a second was injured in a one-car crash on Route 66 Sunday night in an area known as the ledges, police said.

About 9:30 p.m., a Dodge Dart was traveling west when it drove off the left side of the road, struck an embankment and continued on, smashing into a utility pole and a tree. Both occupants were ejected, police said.

One of the people was pronounced dead at the scene, and the second was taken by Life Star helicopter to Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
