Some Sandy Hook parents are trying to reset the conversation about gun violence prevention.

They say contentious debates have stalled gun reform legislation.  So Sandy Hook Promise, a group founded by local families, is launching a campaign called “Parent Together.”  They hope to attract 500,000 signatures online from people committed to putting children first during difficult conversations about gun safety and mental health.

Mark Barden’s son Daniel was killed in last December’s school shooting.

“All parents want to do right by their children and do that job well so we can establish that as the framework to have this conversation and change the way people think about it and pull it out of the political divisiveness that politics brings to it and really transcends all areas,” Mark Barden said.

Starting next year Sandy Hook Promise will introduce programs and tools that community leaders can use across the country to help prevent gun violence and raise awareness of mental health issues.
