A fifth grader in Reading is trying to change the landscape or, in this case, the playscape, at her school.

John Read Middle School is acclaimed academically, but Grace Gabriel thinks they need a new playground. She’s made it her job to earn a better place to play. Gabriel is rallying fellow students to take part in yogurt maker Dannon’s ‘Rally for Recess’ contest.

The top five schools win a brand new $30,000 playground. Students earn points when they enter codes on the Rally for Recess website (https://www.rallyforrecess.com/).

As of Tuesday, Read Middle School stands in sixth place.

“I’m trying to get as many people as i can to do it,” Gabriel said.

Jesse Shallett, a fifth-grade guidance counselor at Read Middle School said, “The fact that Grace has been so passionate about this having a letter drafted, talking to the principal , just being out there with the children and trying to get anyone inspired, I think it’s great,”

The students are hoping others enter the Rally for Recess contest to help their cause. The contest ends in February.
