The cold weather is coming and more and more of us are thinking snow.

That’s the mindset at Powder Ridge in Middlefield, which is reopening next week after 8 years.

The mountain will officially reopen next Friday night with new owners, new managers  and a new safety measure at the mountain.

All skiers and snowboarders will be required to wear a helmet.

“We were told by the National Ski Areas Association we are the first mountain in the country to mandate helmet use for all skiers and boarders” said Sean Hayes, the owner of Powder Ridge.

Hayes added, “we might offend a few, but the reality is we are a family destination and we want mom, dad, and the kids to be comfortable.”

According to the National Ski Areas Assocation, helmet use has risen dramatically over the past decade to about 70 percent of skiers and snowboarders.

Skiers and snowboarders who don’t own a helmet will be able to rent one at the resorts ski shop.
