FAIFRIELD — Police have arrested a 44-year-old man who expressed a desire to hurt elementary school children in October and asked police for help.

Joseph Russo was charged Tuesday with first-degree threatening and threatening an act of terrorism. He is in custody with bail set $75,000. He is scheduled to appear in Superior court in

He had been in the custody at St. Vincent’s Medical Center since Oct. 27 while police secured an arrest warrant.

Officers were called to 80 Post Rd. where they found Russo, who was distraught and told the officers he intended to harm students at a local elementary school, police said.

Russo said he had had these thoughts for years and asked for help so he wouldn’t act on them, police said.

Russo was taken St. Vincent’s Medical Center for evaluation and remain there in protective custody while police investigated.

Police also notified Fairfield school officials of the threat and have maintained an open dialogue, police said.
