EAST HARTFORD – UConn sophomore running back Max DeLorenzo scored two touchdowns and senior cornerback Taylor Mack had two interceptions to help UConn defeat Rutgers 28-17 before 22,163 at Rentschler Field Saturday.
DeLorenzo’s second touchdown, early in the fourth quarter, put the Huskies back on top for good, 21-17 and the Huskies tacked on another score when quarterback Casey Cochran (25 of 33, 311 yards, 2 TDs) found Brian Lemelle for a 3-yard score with 3:04 left to play.
Mack’s second interception of the game – third of the season – quickly followed.
UConn led most of the game with the exception of a short-lived 17-14 Rutgers advantage in the fourth but the Huskies quickly answered on the next drive when Cochran hit Deshon Foxx (9×117) for the key play, a 40-yard reception, on an 8-play, 80-yard drive in which DeLorenzo (15×52) gave the Huskies the lead back, 21-17 with 14:22 to play.
UConn improves to 2-9, 2-6 in the American while Rutgers (5-6, 2-5) will have to wait and win against South Florida next week to qualify for a postseason bowl.
