The CIAC football committee has approved a request from Newtown High Athletic Director Gregg Simon that if the Nighthawks advance to the Class LL title game, that it be played Dec. 13, according to CIAC director of media and sports information Joel Cookson.

The CIAC typically schedules one championship on Friday and the remaining three on Saturday, which would be the one-year anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

The high school football tournament begins Tuesday night with 16 quarterfinal games throughout the state. Newtown (12-0), the top seed in Class LL and ranked No. 2 in The Courant state ratings, faces No. 8 Ridgefield at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

This year’s championship games will be played on Dec. 13-14 at Central Connecticut State’s Arute Field.
