A new statewide background check is being considered to help pet stores and animal shelters have a better idea who their dogs and cats and other animals are going to.
State Rep. Christopher Davis plans to reintroduce a bill which would establish an Animal Abuser Registry. The registry would be a database of convicted animal abusers in Connecticut. Pet stores and shelters could access this database when someone wants to buy or adopt a pet.
“It would prevent that person from leaving here and going to the Connecticut Humane Society or to the Meriden Humane Society, it would just make it a lot safer all the way around,” Joanne Lincoln said.
Lincoln is with The Simon Foundation, an animal shelter in Bloomfield.
