The last in a series of public hearings about a proposed ban on the sale of dogs and cats in pet stores is set for today.

The issue was taken up during the last legislative session but never went to  a vote.

The bill seeks to put an end to puppy mills, places where dogs are bred for profit in substandard conditions. The bill would require people to buy animals from shelters or pre-approved locations. But opponents of the bill say that Connecticut is already very well-regulated when it comes to this area and the bill would hurt small businesses.

A task force on the matter has held two previous meetings to receive public comment on the issue and today’s meeting is their last. The meeting is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the legislative office building in Hartford.

It is expected that lawmakers will vote on the matter during the next legislative session, which starts in February.
