Korky Vann, the Hartford Courant’s “savvy shopper,” talks about how to find deals on Christmas trees.
If you want to save your money for what you’re putting under the tree, rather than on the tree itself, we’ve got suggestions.
According to a National Christmas Tree Association survey, consumers will spend about $976 million and purchase about 24.5 million Christmas trees this year. The most popular size and best bargain, according to the Association is the 6- to 7-foot size. Go taller than that and you’ll pay a premium.
Popular varieties include Frasier firs, which have sturdy branches, and Balsam firs, which have a stronger pine fragrance. Blue spruce are also good sellers, but needles are sharp, which can make them more difficult to trim.
If the idea of buying a tree with the click of a button appeals to you, Costco, Lowe’s and some other chains are offering fresh-cut Fraser fir trees on their websites — with free delivery to your door – but you’ll pay a price. Online prices for a 6-to-7-foot tree range from $109.99 at Costco.com to $189.99 at Lowes.com.
