WEST HAVEN – Students and staff are returning to campus on Wednesday at the University of New Haven, a day after a man spotted with what appeared to be a rifle prompted a lockdown. That man, 22-year-old William Dong, is in custody but has not been charged yet.

The campus was put on lockdown about 12:45 p.m. after callers to 911 reported seeing a man with a rifle get out of a car at the New Haven Plaza on Campbell Street and begin walking toward the nearby campus.

Police spent Thursday night searching Dong’s family home in Fairfield. Additional information is expected to be released today.
