Lawmakers Discuss Reforms After Night Club Shootings

Some Connecticut lawmakers and Hartford city leaders met to discuss night club related violence Tuesday afternoon.

The conversation stemmed from two deadly shootings outside a night club in Hartford over the summer and one deadly shooting at a New Haven night club in October.

The group, including Commissioner of Consumer Protection William Rubenstein, agreed that the violence is somehow related to so-called “juice bars”, or bars that allow underage patrons from 18-years-old and up.

Rubenstein said there is an existing state statute related to “juice bars” but currently, it is not being enforced appropriately. For example, juice bar operators are required by law to contact local law enforcement 2 days before an underage event. Hartford Police say they rarely do.

Others at the meeting argued that “juice bars” should be outlawed all together.

“Because it’s not juice. Juice is not alcohol. Alcohol is not juice. So, let’s just separate the terms, first of all. And then let’s separate the age groups, second of all. And then let’s do what we have to do,” Concerned resident Denise Best said.
