Trumbull High School will no longer be Rent free. The high school’s production of the Tony Award winning Broadway musical is now a go after the school’s principal announced recently it would likely not happen.

He was concerned there would not be adequate time to prepare an educational plan to accompany some of the tough topics the show delves into, including AIDS, homosexuality and drug addiction.

The issue was expected to be on the agenda at this evening’s Board of Education meeting, but two hours prior to the meeting, Marc Guarino, the first year principal at Trumbull High School, released a statement saying the musical would be performed by the THS Thespian Society from April 30 through May 4.

“The objective was to determine when and how the performance could take place in accordance with my original plan for the necessary learning opportunities that are essential as a preparatory process,” said Guarino. “Our intervention specialist will be key in understanding the significant themes which will carry our cast and crew from production to performance and integrate them throughout the school. We will look to partner with the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) to provide resources and training for our faculty, staff, and students.”

Larissa Mark, president of the Trumbull High School Thespian Society, worked on changing her principal’s mind by drafting a petition.

“This petition has 1,516 signatures on it, from students in Trumbull High. And, this was gathered in two days,” said Mark, who hopes to attend Columbia University.

Mark also crafted a social media campaign, through Facebook and Twitter, targeting those 18 and older with a simple question: Do you favor the musical or not?

“We got about 400 responses and 97 percent of those responses were positive towards Rent,” added Mark.
