A cold night in Hamden, Thursday, was coupled with warm hearts.

More than a dozen people gathered to reflect and remember the tragedy in Newtown that happened nearly one year ago.

“To be able to give them this great remembrance with this candlelight vigil, it shows them they are forever in our thoughts,” said Chris Vega, Hamden Human Rights and Relations Commission.

The group that lit up city hall came from all walks of life.

Sandi Pavkov is a teacher at an elementary school in New Haven.

“One of our teachers in North Haven lost a grandchild in that event,” she said.

Doreen Vetro from Northford attended Sandy Hook Elementary School as a child.

“I hope people pass their hope onto other people and remember the kids,” said Vetro.

In the center of the vigil was a cutout of an angel with an extra large heart.

“Within the heart there are 26 hearts,” said Vega. “Each heart symbolizes a heart for a victim lost in this senseless act.”

“I want people to remember that we’re all together,” said Hamden Mayor Scott Jackson.

While the vigil was meant to remember the victims it was also a way to let Newtown know the pain and heartbreak they’re experiencing is one they’re not going through alone.
