NEWINGTON — An employee Christmas party at Joey Garlic’s restaurant on the Berlin Turnpike turned violent early Thursday when two employees fought and one ended up smashing the other in the face with a beer bottle.

The result, Newington police said, was a “significant facial laceration” which may leave the victm disfigured.

Ruben Zahuantila, 36, of 511 Park St., Hartford, was charged with first-degree asssault and breach of peace. He was held on $100,000 bail for arraignment Thursday in Superior Court in New Britain.

Police said Zahuantila and his colleague got into an argument, but that it was defused by a manager. A short time later, police said, the two employees began to argue in the parking lot and Zahuantila smashed the victim in the face with a beer bottle.

Zahuantila remained at the scene, and after a short investigation police took him into custody without incident and charged. A charge of failure to appear in court was added later.
