EAST HAMPTON — Local police, postal inspectors and the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection are working to determine what made an employee at the Cobalt Post Office ill sometime prior to 8 a.m. Thursday.

So far, there are few answers.

A DEEP spokesman said a postal worker at the post office, at 371 West High St., told a customer that he smelled a chemical odor. The customer also smelled the odor and both left the building, DEEP spokesman Dwayne Gardner said. Once outside, the postal worker reportedly lost consciousness.

At the hospital, the postal worker described a sulfur odor. East Hampton police tracked down the customer, who was not ill but described a burning plastic odor, Gardner said.

Air monitoring also revealed no problems, Gardner said. DEEP officials also checked inside the post office and found no problems. DEEP officials left the scene and turned it over to postal officials.
