A confederation of business owners, tradesmen and everyday citizens in this blue-collar city — all volunteers, many of them descendants of immigrants who came here years ago — on Sunday plan to unwrap an early Christmas present to the community in the form of a 16-ton, 52-foot-tall illuminated cross.

The cross — erected Friday afternoon — replaces a similar one that towered over the Holy Land U.S.A. religious attraction in the second half of the 20th century, a landmark to passing motorists on I-84 and Route 8.

Construction crews worked furiously in recent weeks to finish assembling the pieces and move them into position on Pine Hill in time for Sunday’s official 6 p.m. lighting ceremony.
